Terry O' Connell

Terry's keynote address explores the significance of explicit restorative practice. The exponential growth of restorative practices over the last two decades is recognition that these practices have much wider application than was ever envisaged in the early 1990s. It will be argued that an explicit restorative framework capable of providing a “relational” foundation for all practice is essential if we are to challenge and influence “mainstream” practice. This ensures that the focus in on 'practice' rather than models, techniques or strategies.

Explicit practice requires a sound practice rationale underpinned by clarity around beliefs, values and working assumptions in order to explain why a particular practice works. Sharing this practice with those seeking help is fundamental to building relational capacity. This ensures that restorative practice’s true potential can be fully realised. A number of case studies will be cited in Terry's keynote address, as evidence that explicit restorative practice can create a deeper and more satisfying experience.
